Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT EVELYN WALKED AWAY

Evelyn loved the triplets.
That was the problem.
She loved their small hands.
Their sleepy smiles.
The way Noah asked for the same story every night.
The way Oliver brought her broken toys because he believed she could fix anything.
The way Lily leaned against her when the world became too loud.
And she was beginning to love their father.
That frightened her most.
One evening, Adrien asked her to stay for dinner.
She agreed.
The children were asleep.
They sat together in the kitchen.
Not the formal dining room.
The kitchen.
Where the lights were warm and the chairs didn't cost a fortune.
Adrien looked at her.
“Evelyn.”
She smiled.
“Yes?”
“I don't want you to leave.”
Her expression changed.
He continued.
“I know you've been considering going back to school.”
She nodded.
“I have.”
“I could help.”
Evelyn stiffened.
“Adrien—”
“Not as charity.”
She shook her head.
“That's not the point.”
He stopped.
Evelyn looked down.
“I don't know who I am in this house.”
He frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“I'm not the nanny.”
“No.”
“I'm not family.”
Adrien's expression softened.
“You could be.”
Evelyn looked up sharply.
The words hung between them.
Adrien reached for her hand.
“I care about you.”
Her eyes filled.
“I care about you too.”
“Then why are you pulling away?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Because I don't want to become someone who stays because three children need her and a powerful man can make her life easier.”
Adrien stared.
She continued.
“I need to know I can build a life of my own.”
Silence.
Then Adrien nodded.
“You're right.”
Evelyn blinked.
He smiled sadly.
“I don't like it.”
She laughed through tears.
“But you're right.”
The following week, Evelyn enrolled in a child development program.
She moved into a slightly larger apartment.
And reduced her visits to the Belandi estate.
The triplets were upset.
Adrien explained carefully that Evelyn still cared about them.
She simply had her own life too.
On her last evening before classes began, Lily hugged her tightly.
“Come back?”
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Lily looked at her.
“Promise?”
Evelyn smiled.
May you like
“I promise to visit.”
And she kept that promise.
