Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO BE ORDINARY

Adrien Belandi had never been ordinary.

He had inherited a criminal empire before his thirtieth birthday.

He had spent years believing fear was the only reliable form of protection.

But his children changed him.

Evelyn changed him.

And the investigation into Celeste's conduct forced him to confront how much he had failed to see inside his own home.

Adrien began restructuring his life.

He withdrew from unlawful operations, cooperated with legal proceedings where required, and placed legitimate businesses under independent oversight.

The transition was difficult.

Some associates resisted.

Others left.

He faced consequences for decisions he had made.

But he continued.

One afternoon, Evelyn found him in the backyard assembling a wooden swing set.

He was wearing jeans.

His sleeves were rolled up.

A wrench lay beside him.

And he looked deeply offended by the instruction manual.

Evelyn laughed.

“Trouble?”

Adrien glared at the wooden frame.

“This thing is impossible.”

She smiled.

“You could hire someone.”

“I could.”

“Then why aren't you?”

He looked toward the house.

“Because Noah asked me to build it.”

Evelyn's expression softened.

Adrien picked up the wrench.

“And I'm going to build it.”

She sat beside him.

“Want help?”

He smiled.

“Please.”

They spent the afternoon assembling the swing set.

It leaned slightly to the left.

Adrien insisted it was intentional.

Evelyn disagreed.

The children loved it anyway.

That evening, Adrien walked Evelyn to her car.

He took her hand.

“I used to think I needed to be feared.”

She looked at him.

“And now?”

He smiled.

“Now I think I'd rather be trusted.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“That's a better goal.”

Adrien kissed her.

Softly.

May you like

Carefully.

And for the first time in years, he felt no need to control what happened next.
