Chapter 8 - THE HOSPITAL BILL THAT EXPOSED ANOTHER LIE

Claire's mother suffered another medical setback that winter.

Her recovery became more complicated.

And the bills continued growing.

Claire worked double shifts.

Skipped meals.

And slept in the hospital waiting room whenever she could.

Adrian noticed.

One evening, he found her at the Grand Meridian after closing.

“You look exhausted.”

Claire smiled faintly.

“That's because I am.”

He sat beside her.

“Why didn't you tell me things were this difficult?”

She shrugged.

“Because you're not responsible for fixing my life.”

Adrian nodded.

“Fair.”

He hesitated.

“Would you allow me to help you find a patient advocate?”

Claire looked up.

“What?”

“Someone who can review the bills, insurance decisions, and available assistance programs.”

She studied him.

“No checks?”

He smiled.

“No checks.”

Claire laughed softly.

“Okay.”

With help from the hospital's financial-assistance office, Claire obtained a revised payment plan and additional support for her mother's care.

It didn't solve everything.

But it gave her breathing room.

That evening, she told Adrian.

“Thank you.”

He smiled.

“You're welcome.”

Then he added, “You know, my mother would have liked you.”

Claire laughed.

“She probably would have told you to eat your soup.”

Adrian smiled.

May you like

“Yes.”

And for the first time in years, the memory of Eleanor made him feel warmth instead of only grief.
