Adrian spent the next several weeks examining his father's past.
Edward Vale had been admired as a ruthless businessman.
He built factories.
Acquired companies.
And demanded absolute loyalty.
But the letters revealed another side.
He had controlled Adrian's marriage.
Interfered with Rebecca's decisions.
And used threats to shape the family's future.
Adrian realized he had spent decades becoming the kind of man his father admired.
Cold.
Efficient.
Unquestioned.
One evening, Claire found him sitting alone in his office.
“Adrian?”
He looked up.
“I spent my whole life trying to prove I was better than him.”
Claire sat opposite him.
“And?”
He looked toward the window.
“I became him.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not completely.”
He smiled bitterly.
“How can you be sure?”
“Because you're asking whether you were wrong.”
Adrian looked at her.
“My father never did.”
For a long moment, they sat in silence.
Then Adrian asked, “Do you think Olivia will ever forgive me?”
Claire hesitated.
“That's her decision.”
He nodded.
“And if she doesn't?”
“Then you respect that.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
For the first time, he understood that being a father wasn't about having authority.
