Chapter 3 - THE DAUGHTER HE NEVER KNEW EXISTED

Claire sat frozen beside her mother's bed.
His daughter lives.
The words seemed impossible.
Adrian Vale had been married once.
His wife, Rebecca, died eighteen years earlier.
According to public records, they had no children.
Claire knew that much because she had searched his name on her phone after leaving the restaurant.
Now her mother was telling her something completely different.
Claire leaned closer.
Mom, what daughter?
Margaret struggled to move her hand.
Eleanor knew.
Claire swallowed.
Knew what?
Her mother closed her eyes.
Then signed slowly.
Baby. Hospital. Taken away.
Claire stared.
A baby.
A hospital.
Taken away.
Margaret's breathing became uneven.
Claire called the nurse.
The medical team assessed her and helped her rest.
The conversation ended.
But the words remained.
The next morning, Adrian called.
“Claire?”
She hesitated.
“I spoke to my mother.”
His voice sharpened.
“How is she?”
“Stable.”
A pause.
“Did she remember me?”
“Yes.”
Adrian exhaled.
“Thank God.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“There's something else.”
He went silent.
“She said you have a daughter.”
For several seconds, there was no sound.
Then Adrian whispered, “What?”
Claire swallowed.
“She said your mother knew.”
Adrian's voice changed.
“Claire, I need to see Margaret.”
They met at the hospital that afternoon.
Adrian arrived without photographers or executives.
He wore a dark coat and carried a small bouquet of yellow flowers.
When Margaret saw him, she began crying.
Adrian stood beside her bed.
Then raised his hands.
Maggie.
Margaret smiled through tears.
Little Adrian.
He laughed softly.
“I'm not little anymore.”
Margaret signed.
Still stubborn.
Claire smiled.
For several minutes, they communicated in sign language.
They remembered Eleanor.
The old neighborhood.
Sunday dinners.
The years when money was scarce.
Then Adrian's expression changed.
He signed carefully.
Claire says you know something about a child.
Margaret's smile disappeared.
She looked toward Claire.
Then back at Adrian.
Her hand trembled.
Rebecca.
Adrian went still.
His late wife.
Margaret continued.
She was pregnant.
Adrian stared.
“No.”
Margaret's eyes filled.
She gave birth.
Adrian stepped backward.
His face drained.
“That's impossible.”
Margaret shook her head.
The baby lived.
Adrian gripped the bedrail.
“Where?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then signed one final word.
Chicago.
Claire stared at him.
