Chapter 10 - THE WAITRESS WHO CHANGED HIS BOARDROOM

Adrian began changing Vale Continental.

Not dramatically.

Not overnight.

He introduced stronger employee protections.

Expanded family leave.

Improved workplace accessibility.

And established independent channels for reporting misconduct.

Some executives complained.

One board member called the changes unnecessary.

Adrian looked at him.

“Then you've never needed them.”

The room fell silent.

He also funded an accessibility initiative supporting Deaf and hard-of-hearing employees.

Claire was invited to advise on the program.

She hesitated.

“I'm a waitress.”

Adrian smiled.

“You're also fluent in ASL and have lived experience navigating inaccessible systems.”

Claire considered that.

Then agreed.

She helped connect the company with qualified Deaf professionals and accessibility consultants.

The program grew.

More employees received communication support.

Meetings became more accessible.

And the company began hiring more Deaf workers.

Adrian watched the changes carefully.

For the first time, his success felt connected to something other than profit.

One afternoon, Claire asked him, “Are you happy?”

He thought for a moment.

“I'm learning.”

May you like

She smiled.

“That's a start.”
