Chapter 6 - The Father’s Voice on the Satellite Phone

Chief Miller looked at me, then at the buzzing phone.

“Put it on speaker,” I said.

Miller pressed the green icon and activated the loudspeaker.

A deep, gravelly voice laced with arrogant authority boomed into the quiet suite:

‘Gregory! Did you handle the girl yet? The cruise passed the twelve-mile international boundary twenty minutes ago. Make sure the bat doesn't leave visible bruising on her torso before the balcony drop. I have the claims adjuster on standby in Miami for Tuesday morning.’

Chief Miller’s jaw tightened in profound disgust. The ship’s security team recorded every single word through their body-worn cameras.

I leaned down toward the phone on the nightstand.

“Arthur Hartman,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice cutting like a razor.

The voice on the other end stopped instantly. ‘Who... who is this? Where is Gregory?!’

“This is your daughter-in-law,” I replied. “Gregory swung the bat. I broke his nose, disarmed him in under four seconds, and tied him to the bedframe with industrial zip-ties.”

A choked gasp sounded over the satellite link. ‘You... you touched my son?! Do you know who I am?!’

“You are a bankrupt con artist whose thirty-year murder scheme has just collapsed,” I said with absolute finality. “The Coast Guard has your frequency. The FBI is executing a federal raid on your Coral Gables mansion right now. Sleep with one eye open, Arthur.”

I tapped the screen and disconnected the call.

Gregory burst into helpless, pathetic tears, groaning into the hand towel as ship security officers lifted him onto a transport gurney, replacing my nylon ties with heavy steel law enforcement handcuffs.
