Chapter 5 - The Coast Guard Radio at Sea

The line connected on the second ring.

“Bridge command, First Officer Larson speaking.”

“First Officer Larson,” I spoke clearly, projecting the crisp, commanding authority of a military officer. “This is Captain Ashlynn Vance, former United States Marine Corps, passenger in Suite 804. I have neutralized an armed assailant in my cabin who attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect is currently restrained. I have physical evidence of an active conspiracy to commit maritime murder and insurance fraud.”

A shocked silence hung over the line for two seconds.

“Ma’am... did you say an armed assailant?”

“Send the Chief of Ship Security, two armed master-at-arms officers, and notify the United States Coast Guard Sector Miami and the FBI Maritime Liaison Office immediately. We have high-value federal evidence requiring chain-of-custody preservation.”

“Security team is en route to Suite 804 right now, Captain,” Larson replied with immediate discipline.

Within three minutes, the heavy oak door of the suite rattled with a keycard override.

Chief of Security Miller and three uniformed ship officers stepped into the room, their tasers drawn.

They took in the scene with stunned disbelief: Gregory Hartman pinned to the floor in zip-ties with a broken nose, a bloody aluminum bat resting on the sofa, and me standing tall in my evening dress, holding the federal insurance documents in hand.

Chief Miller stepped forward, checking Gregory’s pulse and inspecting the zip-ties.

“He's secured, Chief,” I said, handing over the manila folder. “Here is the premeditation evidence. And here is his personal satellite phone—which is currently receiving a call from his father.”

The encrypted satellite phone on the nightstand was buzzing violently, flashing the caller ID: ARTHUR HARTMAN — HOME OFFICE.
