Chapter 5 - A LETTER HIDDEN INSIDE THE MARBLE WALL

The Moretti mansion had been built in 1928.

It contained thirty-one rooms, six fireplaces, and enough marble to make the entire building feel cold even in July.

But the strangest feature was the east-wing corridor.

Its walls were unusually thick.

Alessia had noticed the difference while cleaning.

The baseboards didn't align with the adjacent rooms.

The marble panels were newer than the surrounding stone.

And one panel produced a hollow sound when tapped.

She mentioned this to Dante.

He looked at her.

"You're telling me my walls are suspicious?"

"I'm telling you somebody renovated one section of the house and pretended they didn't."

He smiled faintly.

Then asked Rocco to locate the renovation plans.

---

The documents showed that the east wing had been remodeled eight years earlier.

Three weeks after Maria Moretti died.

The contractor was a subsidiary of Bellini's accounting group.

Dante stared at the invoice.

"Lorenzo told me the walls had water damage."

Alessia pointed toward the plans.

"Then why did they move an interior partition?"

He said nothing.

She continued.

"And why did they cover an old ventilation shaft?"

Dante studied her.

"What did you do before working here?"

The question startled her.

"My father was a restoration carpenter."

"And you learned from him?"

"I worked beside him every summer."

Dante nodded slowly.

"What else did he teach you?"

Alessia smiled sadly.

"That old buildings remember what people try to hide."

---

With an independent contractor present and the work properly documented, Dante authorized a careful examination of the altered panel.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside lay a metal document tube.

Alessia watched as Sarah Whitcomb opened it.

Several papers slid onto the table.

Architectural drawings.

Financial statements.

And a handwritten letter.

The envelope was addressed to Dante.

In Maria's handwriting.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Dante,

If you're reading this, I didn't find the courage to tell you everything in person.

I've discovered that the Riverside Renewal Project has been stealing from the families it promised to help.

The compensation fund is almost empty, but Bellini continues reporting that every payment has been completed.

Dante stopped reading.

Alessia watched his face.

He looked as though someone had struck him.

Then he continued.

I confronted Lorenzo. He said I didn't understand how business worked.

Clara helped me copy the records.

If anything happens to either of us, please don't believe we simply walked away.

The final line was underlined.

The original ledger is not in the study. It's where Father kept the promises he never intended to keep.

Dante lowered the letter.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered, "She knew."

Alessia approached carefully.

"Your sister?"

He nodded.

"She knew Bellini was stealing."

Sarah examined the financial statements.

"The amount involved could be substantial."

Dante looked toward the window.

Riverside Renewal had been one of the family's most celebrated redevelopment projects.

The public believed it had transformed abandoned industrial land into affordable housing.

But Maria's documents suggested that displaced families had been denied compensation while money flowed through companies controlled by Bellini.

"Why didn't she come to me?" Dante whispered.

Alessia answered gently.

"Maybe she did."

He looked up.

"Maybe you weren't ready to listen."

The words hurt him.

She could see that.

But he didn't argue.

---

Later that evening, Dante found Alessia in the kitchen.

She was preparing tea.

He stood in the doorway.

"May I come in?"

She almost laughed.

"It's your kitchen."

"That wasn't my question."

She looked at him.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

He approached the counter.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Dante said, "I keep thinking about Maria."

Alessia placed a cup in front of him.

"What about her?"

"She was always asking me to slow down. To listen. To stop acting like every problem was a negotiation."

He smiled sadly.

"She used to say I could buy a hundred buildings and still not know how to make a home."

Alessia looked toward the hallway.

"She sounds wise."

"She was."

He took a breath.

"Thank you for finding her letter."

Alessia shook her head.

"Your sister left it because she wanted the truth found."

Dante looked at her for a long moment.

Then said quietly, "I think she would have liked you."

Alessia smiled.

"Maybe."

But the moment ended when Sarah called.

The missing assistant, Clara Velez, had finally been located.

She was alive.

And she had one message for Dante.
