Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT MORETTI LOST HIS EMPIRE

By dawn, the Riverside pumping station was severely damaged by fire.

Investigators classified the blaze as suspicious.

The timing suggested someone wanted to destroy evidence.

But the original records had already been secured.

The attempt had failed.

Then the financial investigation expanded.

Several companies associated with the Moretti family faced searches and legal proceedings.

Bank accounts were frozen under court orders.

Business partners withdrew.

The board of Moretti Development Group demanded an independent review.

And Dante discovered that the empire he had inherited was not nearly as solid as he believed.

---

At a tense board meeting, Dante was presented with a choice.

Continue defending the previous leadership's financial practices.

Or cooperate with investigators and accept a restructuring that would cost him substantial control.

His attorney explained the consequences.

He could lose companies.

Properties.

Influence.

His family's name might appear in court documents for years.

Dante listened.

Then asked one question.

"How much money is still owed to the Riverside families?"

The accountants hesitated.

Finally, one provided an estimate.

Millions.

Dante looked toward the window.

For years, his companies had claimed credit for transforming neighborhoods.

Now he understood that some families had been displaced while money intended for them vanished.

He turned back.

"Then we start there."

---

That afternoon, Dante announced the creation of an independently supervised compensation process using recoverable company assets.

He also authorized a complete review of labor practices within the household and related businesses.

Employees who had been improperly dismissed received opportunities to bring claims through independent representation.

Some were rehired where appropriate.

Others received wages and compensation established through lawful agreements.

Mrs. Conte was dismissed after the investigation documented misconduct.

Bellini remained missing.

And Dante stepped away from day-to-day control of several companies during the review.

The news spread quickly.

Reporters gathered outside the estate.

Financial commentators described the restructuring as catastrophic.

Former allies accused Dante of betrayal.

Some members of the Moretti family refused to speak to him.

But Dante didn't reverse his decision.

---

Alessia watched the announcement from her apartment.

She felt proud of him.

And frightened for him.

Not because he was losing money.

Because he was losing the identity that had protected him for most of his life.

That evening, she called.

He answered quietly.

"Alessia."

"How are you?"

A pause.

"Not particularly well."

She smiled sadly.

"That sounds honest."

He laughed softly.

"I've lost almost everything I spent my adult life building."

"Not everything."

He was silent.

She continued.

"You still have your integrity if you're willing to keep choosing it."

His voice changed.

"Do you really believe that?"

"Yes."

---

A week later, the authorities located Bellini.

He had been staying under a false identity in a rented property outside the city.

He was arrested in connection with financial offenses and witness intimidation.

During questioning, he admitted involvement in the fraudulent Riverside payments.

He also acknowledged paying intermediaries to pressure Antonio Romano and Clara Velez.

But the investigation into Maria's fatal accident remained unresolved.

The evidence established threats and financial motives.

It did not yet establish that Bellini caused her death.

Dante struggled with that uncertainty.

He wanted an answer.

A name.

A person to blame.

But Alessia reminded him that truth did not always arrive in the form people wanted.

---

One evening, Dante visited Maria's grave.

Alessia accompanied him.

He placed white flowers beside the stone.

For a long time, he stood silently.

Then he whispered, "I'm sorry."

Alessia looked toward him.

Dante continued.

"I should have listened."

His voice broke.

"I thought I was protecting the family by refusing to hear anything that might destroy it."

Alessia took his hand.

"She knew you loved her."

He looked at the stone.

"That wasn't enough."

"No," Alessia whispered. "Sometimes love requires action."

Dante closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

For the first time, he understood that losing his empire might be the beginning of becoming someone his sister would recognize.
