Chapter 14 - THE LAST DOOR IN THE MANSION

Eighteen months later, Alessia returned to Chicago.

She came back with a professional portfolio, a promotion, and enough savings to begin planning her own restoration company.

Dante met her at the airport.

He looked different.

The charcoal suits were gone.

He wore a navy coat and an ordinary sweater.

His hair was slightly longer.

And when he smiled, the expression reached his eyes.

"Welcome home."

Alessia laughed.

"You're early."

"I've been practicing patience."

"Any progress?"

"Very little."

She hugged him.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then he whispered, "I missed you."

She smiled against his shoulder.

"I missed you too."

---

The Moretti mansion was being prepared for sale.

Dante had spent the previous year cooperating with legal and financial reviews.

The remaining legitimate businesses were under independent professional management.

Several properties had been sold to satisfy obligations and fund approved compensation arrangements.

He no longer lived like the man Alessia first met.

And the mansion no longer felt like his home.

He invited her to visit one final time.

She agreed.

---

They entered through the front door.

The chandelier still hung above the foyer.

The marble floors remained polished.

But the house was quiet.

No line of housekeepers.

No armed guards beside the staircase.

No Mrs. Conte standing with dismissal letters.

Alessia stopped beside the spot where her suitcase had once waited.

Dante noticed.

"What are you thinking?"

She smiled.

"That I was terrified of you."

He looked down.

"I know."

"And that I was furious."

"Also understandable."

She laughed.

Then looked toward the east wing.

"What happens to the hidden chapel?"

Dante smiled faintly.

"We're preserving it as part of the building's history."

She turned.

"Really?"

"Yes. The new owners have agreed to maintain the original architectural features."

Her eyes brightened.

"Can I see it?"

"Of course."

---

They descended the old staircase.

The hidden records room had been cleared.

The fraudulent documents were now in the appropriate custody of investigators and attorneys.

The chapel remained.

Its stained-glass window had been restored.

The wooden pews were clean.

And on the wall hung a small photograph of Maria Moretti.

Alessia approached it.

Beneath the photograph was a plaque.

MARIA MORETTI — SHE BELIEVED HOMES SHOULD BE BUILT FOR PEOPLE, NOT POWER.

Alessia touched the edge of the frame.

"That's beautiful."

Dante stood beside her.

"I wish she'd lived to see it."

Alessia took his hand.

"She helped make it possible."

He nodded.

---

Then Dante led her toward a narrow door at the back of the chapel.

Alessia frowned.

"What's this?"

"The last room we haven't restored."

He handed her an old brass key.

She smiled.

"Another key?"

"Apparently, you have a talent for finding doors."

She unlocked it.

Inside was a small workshop.

Sunlight entered through a high window.

A carpenter's bench stood against one wall.

Original drawings covered another.

And at the center sat an old wooden toolbox.

Alessia recognized it immediately.

Her father's.

She froze.

"Dante?"

He approached slowly.

"Sarah found it during the review of the Riverside contractor records. It had been stored with materials from the old project."

Alessia touched the worn handle.

The initials A.R. were carved into the side.

Tears filled her eyes.

She opened it.

Inside were his measuring tape, pencils, a wooden ruler, and the small brass level he'd used for decades.

Beneath them was a folded note.

In her father's handwriting.

Alessia, remember that a good carpenter never forces crooked wood into a straight frame.

You find out what made it bend.

Then you give it room to become useful again.

She began crying.

Dante stood beside her.

He didn't tell her to stop.

Didn't offer to fix the moment.

He simply waited.

After a while, she turned.

"Thank you."

He smiled.

"I thought you should have it."

She hugged him.

For a long time, they stood among the tools her father had left behind.

Then Dante whispered, "I have one more question."

Alessia looked up.

He reached into his coat.

May you like

And removed a small velvet box.
