Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS FORTUNE

Three months after Dante stepped away from Moretti Development Group, Alessia received an extraordinary offer.
A restoration firm in Boston wanted her to join a major historic-building project.
The salary was excellent.
The work involved preserving early twentieth-century theaters.
And the position could lead to her own restoration practice.
She stared at the letter for nearly an hour.
It was everything she had wanted.
A career.
Independence.
A chance to build something with her own hands.
There was only one complication.
Dante.
---
She told him over dinner.
He listened quietly.
"Boston?"
She nodded.
"At least eighteen months."
He looked down.
"That's a long time."
"I know."
Silence followed.
Then he asked, "Do you want to go?"
Alessia swallowed.
"Yes."
He nodded.
"Then you should."
She stared.
"That's it?"
"What else should I say?"
She laughed nervously.
"I don't know. Something dramatic."
Dante smiled.
"I could buy the company and move it to Chicago."
She gave him a look.
He raised both hands.
"That was a joke."
"Not a very funny one."
"I agree."
They laughed.
Then he grew serious.
"Alessia, I won't ask you to make your life smaller to fit inside mine."
Her eyes filled.
"You mean that?"
"Yes."
She took his hand.
For the first time, she understood how much he had changed.
The old Dante would have solved the problem with money.
Influence.
A command.
The new Dante simply asked what she wanted.
And respected the answer.
---
A week later, Dante offered her something else.
A small envelope.
Inside were documents establishing a substantial financial gift.
Alessia stared.
"What is this?"
"Money your father's business should have earned if those contracts hadn't been taken from him."
She looked at the amount.
It was enormous.
Far more than she had ever imagined.
"Dante, I can't accept this."
"It's restitution."
"Then it needs to be handled through the claims process."
He paused.
She continued.
"I don't want your generosity to become another thing people can use to question whether I earned my success."
Dante considered her words.
Then nodded.
"You're right."
She returned the envelope.
"Help me make sure every family harmed by Bellini gets a fair review. That's what I want."
Dante smiled sadly.
"You're remarkably stubborn."
Alessia raised an eyebrow.
"Coming from you, that's impressive."
---
Before leaving for Boston, Alessia visited Rosa Delgado.
Rosa had received her unpaid wages and a settlement after the documented misconduct was reviewed.
Her husband was receiving regular medical care.
She smiled when Alessia entered.
"You look happy."
"I am."
"Then why do you seem nervous?"
Alessia sighed.
"Because I'm leaving someone I care about."
Rosa nodded.
"Does he want you to stay?"
"He says I should go."
"Then perhaps he really loves you."
Alessia looked up.
Rosa smiled.
"Love doesn't always mean asking someone to stay."
---
At the train station, Dante carried Alessia's suitcase.
This time, nobody had packed it for her.
She had chosen every item herself.
He placed it beside her.
For a moment, they stood in silence.
Then Alessia smiled.
"Do you remember the first time you saw my suitcase?"
Dante laughed softly.
"Unfortunately."
"You looked furious."
"I was."
She stepped closer.
"And now?"
He looked at her.
"Now I'm proud of you."
Her eyes filled.
He touched her cheek.
"Go build something beautiful."
Alessia kissed him.
Then boarded the train.
As the city disappeared beyond the windows, she realized something.
She was no longer the woman who had come down a staircase and found her life packed into a suitcase.
May you like
She was the woman deciding where that suitcase would take her.
