Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO VANISHED FROM PAYROLL

The first missing employee was named Rosa Delgado.

She had worked at the Moretti estate for nine years.

According to the household records, Rosa resigned in January and moved to Arizona.

But Alessia remembered something strange.

Rosa had left behind her winter coat.

A heavy green wool coat she wore every morning.

Nobody willingly moved across the country in January and abandoned their favorite coat without explanation.

Alessia mentioned this to Dante.

He studied her.

"You remember a coat from seven months ago?"

"People notice things when nobody notices them."

Dante went silent.

Then he nodded.

"Find Rosa."

---

Rocco located an address associated with her name.

It wasn't in Arizona.

It was an apartment on Chicago's Southwest Side.

Alessia accompanied an independent investigator named Sarah Whitcomb to meet her.

Dante had hired Sarah after discovering that his internal security reports could no longer be trusted.

Sarah was a former financial-crimes investigator, practical and unimpressed by wealth.

Alessia liked her immediately.

Rosa opened the door wearing slippers and a faded cardigan.

When she saw Alessia, tears filled her eyes.

"Miss Romano?"

Alessia smiled gently.

"Hello, Rosa."

The older woman looked terrified.

"Why are you here?"

"We need to ask about your dismissal."

Rosa stepped backward.

"I didn't do anything."

Sarah held up her identification.

"We aren't here to threaten you."

For several seconds, Rosa hesitated.

Then she invited them inside.

---

Her apartment was small.

A portable oxygen concentrator sat beside the couch.

Medical bills covered the kitchen table.

Rosa's husband had been ill for months.

She had needed her job desperately.

Then one evening, she noticed something unusual while cleaning the dining room.

Bellini had been meeting with contractors.

She heard one mention families who had not received relocation compensation.

When Rosa asked Mrs. Conte about it, she was accused of stealing silverware.

The next morning, she was forced to sign a resignation letter.

"They said if I refused, they'd report me to immigration," Rosa whispered.

Alessia felt sick.

"But you're a permanent resident."

Rosa nodded.

"They knew that."

Sarah took notes.

"What happened afterward?"

"They stopped my final wages. Said I owed money for the missing silver."

Alessia looked at her.

"Did you take anything?"

Rosa shook her head.

"Never."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I worked there nine years. Nine years."

Alessia reached for her hand.

"I'm sorry."

Rosa looked up.

"Does Mr. Moretti know?"

Alessia hesitated.

"He does now."

---

When they returned to the estate, Dante was waiting.

Alessia explained everything.

He listened without interrupting.

Then he asked Sarah to preserve the evidence and refer Rosa to independent legal assistance.

He also instructed his payroll team to review the withholding of her wages.

Alessia watched carefully.

It would have been easy for him to hand Rosa money and declare the problem solved.

Instead, he began examining the system that had allowed someone to threaten her in the first place.

That mattered.

But it didn't excuse the fact that he had ignored the household for years.

Alessia told him so.

Dante looked at her.

"You think I'm responsible."

"I think you had power over these people. And you didn't notice what happened to them."

He accepted the words.

Then said quietly, "My father taught me that loyalty meant not questioning the people who served us."

Alessia shook her head.

"Your father taught you convenience."

Dante looked away.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, "Perhaps he did."

---

That night, Sarah called with another discovery.

Rosa wasn't the only employee dismissed after questioning Bellini.

Eight workers had been removed from the payroll over two years.

Four had been threatened with criminal accusations.

Three had received suspicious deductions from their wages.

One could not be located.

Her name was Clara Velez.

She had worked as Maria Moretti's personal assistant before Maria died.

Dante went completely still.

"Clara?"

Sarah nodded.

"Her last known address was connected to a medical facility outside the city."

Alessia felt cold.

"What happened to her?"

Sarah hesitated.

"We don't know. But somebody has been paying the facility's fees through a company controlled by Bellini."

Dante looked toward Maria's locked cabinet.

Then said something Alessia would never forget.

"My sister tried to tell me about Clara before she died."

He sat down.

"And I told her to stop making trouble."
