Chapter 9 - The Trial Beneath the Vale Name

Adrian’s trial was shorter.
He had confessed.
The real question was whether cooperation and change could reduce punishment without erasing victims.
Several testified against him.
Business owners he had intimidated.
Families harmed by Vale security operations.
Former rivals.
Employees forced into silence.
Adrian listened to each.
He did not look away.
Grant Mercer submitted a statement describing innocent men killed during the false war.
Adrian accepted responsibility.
Evelyn attended the final day.
She sat beside Grace.
Lily remained outside with Emma and a federal child specialist.
When the judge invited Evelyn to speak, she stood carefully.
“Adrian loved me,” she said. “That did not make his world safe.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“He wanted to change after Lily was born. Wanting is not the same as changing.”
The courtroom remained silent.
“But when the truth arrived, he surrendered power instead of using power to bury it.”
She looked at him.
“I do not know what our future will be. I know Lily deserves a father who understands consequences.”
The judge imposed twelve years.
Adrian was taken into custody.
Before leaving, he asked Evelyn one question.
“May I write to her?”
“Yes.”
“To you?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“Yes. But I decide when to answer.”
He nodded.
Choice.
May you like
The concept he had denied others now defined every relationship he hoped to keep.
