Chapter 5 - The Woman Without a Name

Lucian moved Evelyn before federal agents reached the hospital.

Her room was empty.

Medical staff claimed Eva Hill had been transferred under emergency psychiatric authority.

No destination appeared in the system.

Then Marcus provided the second phone.

Messages showed a vehicle convoy heading toward a private airfield near Rockford.

Adrian, Thomas, and federal agents arrived before the plane departed.

Lucian’s men opened fire from the hangar.

The confrontation lasted less than four minutes.

Two guards surrendered.

One fled.

Lucian was not present.

Inside the aircraft, paramedics found Evelyn strapped to a medical bed.

Adrian stopped at the door.

Her hair had been cut short.

Her face was thinner.

A pale scar crossed her forehead.

She looked toward him without recognition.

“Who are you?” she asked.

The question wounded him more deeply than any weapon.

He approached slowly.

“My name is Adrian.”

She pulled against the restraints.

“No.”

He stopped.

“You don’t have to come near me.”

Thomas entered behind him.

Evelyn recognized Thomas first.

Her breathing eased.

“He saved the baby,” she whispered.

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“You remember Lily?”

“Sometimes.”

“Lily is alive.”

Evelyn stared at him.

The words seemed to pass through layers of medication and damaged memory.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

She began crying.

The sound was quiet and confused.

Adrian did not touch her.

Not until she reached for him.

Her fingers closed around his sleeve.

“I know your voice.”

He knelt beside the bed.

“You told me to come home.”

Her eyes widened slightly.

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

“I waited.”

“I know.”

The guilt could have become an excuse.

He did not use it.

“I left when I should have stayed.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Marcus said you chose the meeting.”

“I did.”

“He said you knew about the attack.”

“I didn’t.”

“He said Lily died because you wanted the company.”

Adrian understood.

For eight months, Lucian’s people had rewritten him inside her damaged mind.

He could not demand she believe him.

He could only preserve the truth and wait.

Evelyn entered federal protective care under her real name.

Her recovery would be slow.

Doctors warned that some memory might never return.

Adrian brought Lily to her three days later.

The meeting took place in a quiet hospital garden.

Grace held Lily at the gate.

Evelyn sat beneath a tree.

When she saw the child, her entire body became still.

Lily looked at her.

Then reached outward.

Evelyn began crying before Grace placed the baby in her arms.

“My flower,” she whispered.

The name came from memory.

Adrian stood several feet away.

Evelyn looked at him.

“She has your eyes.”

“And your courage.”

For the first time, she smiled.

Not because everything was repaired.

May you like

Because one thing had survived winter.
