Chapter 9 - THE WIDOW WHO REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT

Cora became the center of the investigation.

Her knowledge of Daniel's work was invaluable.

So was the notebook.

But Wesley was careful not to pressure her.

He offered to pay for her time.

She accepted a formal consulting contract reviewed by her attorney.

He offered security.

She agreed to reasonable protection after receiving threatening messages.

He offered to pay her debts.

She refused.

“I don't want charity,” she told him.

Wesley nodded.

“Then I won't offer it again.”

She looked at him.

“Why are you helping me?”

He was quiet.

Finally, he said:

“Because you helped me see something I should have noticed years ago.”

Cora frowned.

“What?”

“That my power doesn't make me right.”

She studied him.

Wesley continued.

“And because Daniel deserved better than what happened to him.”

Cora's eyes filled.

For the first time in years, she felt that someone believed her husband had mattered.
