Chapter 7 - THE HUSBAND WHO COULD NOT BE TRUSTED

Isabella was safe.
Marco found her at her college dormitory in Boston.
She had been studying with friends.
Her phone had died.
I nearly collapsed with relief.
Antonio sat beside me.
“She's safe.”
I nodded.
Then looked at him.
“Who sent those messages?”
He hesitated.
“I don't know.”
I stared.
“Antonio.”
He looked at me.
I continued.
“You said my father was connected to Elena's death.”
His expression darkened.
“Yes.”
“Then why marry me?”
Silence.
He looked toward the ocean.
Then answered:
“Because your father had information I needed.”
My stomach dropped.
I stared.
“So I was leverage.”
Antonio closed his eyes.
“At first.”
The words hurt more than I expected.
I stepped back.
“Get out.”
He looked at me.
“Sophia.”
“Get out of my room.”
He stood.
For a moment, I thought he would argue.
Instead, he nodded.
“I'm sorry.”
Then he left.
I locked the connecting door.
And cried.
Not because I loved him.
At least, that was what I told myself.
May you like
But because I had begun to believe the honeymoon meant something.
And now I wasn't sure what was real.
