Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO GAVE HER THE KEYS

Elena returned to New York in late summer.

She was thinner than in the photographs.

Older.

More cautious.

But alive.

Antonio held her for a long time at the airport.

I stood nearby.

Watching.

Then Elena turned toward me.

“You're Sophia.”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

She hugged me.

“Thank you.”

My eyes filled.

“For what?”

“For helping him believe.”

I looked toward Antonio.

He smiled faintly.

Over the following months, Antonio cooperated with investigators.

His legitimate businesses were placed under independent oversight.

His criminal operations were dismantled.

He faced legal consequences for his own past decisions.

It was difficult.

Painful.

And uncertain.

But he continued.

One evening, he placed a set of keys on the table.

I frowned.

“What are these?”

He smiled.

“The apartment in Manhattan.”

I stared.

“Antonio.”

He continued.

“And the island.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He smiled faintly.

“I've transferred my personal interests into a trust with independent management.”

I stared.

“Why?”

He took my hand.

“Because I don't want our marriage to depend on what I own.”

My eyes filled.

He continued.

“I want you to be free to choose whether you stay.”

I looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Antonio.”

He smiled sadly.

“I know I haven't earned your trust completely.”

May you like

A pause.

“But I'm going to keep trying.”
