Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT WARNING

I didn't sleep that night.
Antonio's words replayed in my head.
Your father was connected to the people who killed Elena.
I sat on the balcony.
The ocean was dark.
The sky filled with stars.
At midnight, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
DO NOT TRUST YOUR HUSBAND.
My stomach tightened.
Another message arrived.
HE DIDN'T MARRY YOU FOR LOVE.
I stared.
Then a photograph appeared.
My father.
Standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
The caption read:
ASK ANTONIO WHAT HAPPENED IN MIAMI SIX YEARS AGO.
My hands began shaking.
I looked toward the connecting door.
Antonio's room was dark.
For a moment, I considered waking him.
Then another message arrived.
YOUR SISTER IS NEXT.
I froze.
I called Isabella.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
My heart raced.
I ran toward Antonio's room.
Pounded on the door.
“Antonio!”
It opened immediately.
He stood barefoot, wearing black sweatpants and a white T-shirt.
“Sophia?”
I held up the phone.
His expression changed.
Then he took it.
Read the messages.
And went completely still.
“Marco,” he said into his phone.

His voice was cold.
“Find Isabella. Now.”
