Chapter 8 - THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY LISTENED
After the event, Adrian waited near the exit.
Claire appeared with several volunteers.
She stopped when she saw him.
Her smile disappeared.
“Adrian.”
He nodded.
“Claire.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he said:
“You were wonderful.”
She looked surprised.
“Thank you.”
“I didn't know.”
Her expression changed.
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“I should have.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked down.
“I read your letter.”
“I assumed you would.”
He hesitated.
“I'm sorry.”
Claire remained quiet.
He continued.
“Not because you left.”
Her eyes lifted.
“Because I made you feel invisible.”
Something flickered across her face.
Pain.
Then caution.
“Adrian.”
He shook his head.
“I'm not here to ask you to come home.”
She stared.
He took a breath.
“I just wanted to tell you that I finally understand why you went.”
Claire looked away.
For a moment, he thought she might cry.
Instead, she nodded.
“Thank you.”
Then she stepped around him.
And walked toward the waiting volunteers.
