Chapter 10 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE SUITCASE

Three months after Claire left, Adrian learned why she'd kept the suitcase packed.
He was visiting the estate's storage room when he found an old photograph.
Claire as a little girl.
Standing beside her mother.
Both smiling.
Beside them sat the same brown leather suitcase.
On the back, someone had written:
CLAIRE AND MOM — THE DAY WE STARTED OVER.
Adrian stared.
Later, he asked Frank about it.
The driver hesitated.
Then told him what he knew.
Claire's mother had left an abusive marriage when Claire was twelve.
She'd taken one suitcase.
Nothing else.
They had moved into a small apartment.
Worked hard.
Started over.
And built a peaceful life.
When Claire's mother died, she left the suitcase to her daughter.
Adrian closed his eyes.
He remembered telling Claire to throw it away.
He remembered laughing at its cracked leather.
He remembered buying expensive luggage because he thought the old suitcase embarrassed him.
Now he understood.
The suitcase had never represented poverty.
It represented freedom.
A reminder that Claire could leave a place where she wasn't loved properly.
Even if leaving was frightening.
Even if she had to start over.
Adrian sat alone for a long time.
Then whispered:
May you like
“I'm sorry, Claire.”
But this time, he knew an apology wasn't enough.
