Chapter 7 - THE FIRST TIME HE SAW HER WORLD

Two weeks later, Adrian attended a public fundraising event hosted by Mercer Community Holdings.
He hadn't been invited personally.
He purchased a ticket like everyone else.
The event took place in a renovated warehouse near Pittsburgh's riverfront.
Adrian arrived alone.
No security entourage.
No Lauren.
No expensive gifts.
He stood near the back.
And watched Claire walk onto the stage.
She wore a simple navy dress.
Her blond hair fell around her shoulders.
She looked confident.
Alive.
Nothing like the quiet woman who used to sit beside him at formal dinners.
“Good evening,” she began.
The audience applauded.
Claire smiled.
“Eight years ago, I met a grandmother who was sleeping in her car because she couldn't afford rent and her grandson's medication.”
Adrian went still.
Claire continued.
“Her name was Ruth Bell.”
He remembered the package on the console.
For Ruth.
“She told me something I've never forgotten.”
Claire paused.
“She said, ‘People don't need someone to rescue them. Sometimes they just need someone to stop closing doors.’”
The room fell silent.
Claire smiled.
“So we opened one.”
Applause filled the warehouse.
Adrian stared.
For years, he had thought his wife was doing small charity projects to pass the time.
Now he saw hundreds of people whose lives she'd changed.
And he understood something devastating.
May you like
Claire had never needed his money to become important.
She had needed him to notice that she already was.
