Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HERSELF

Claire's new life was smaller.
And happier.
She rented a modest townhouse near the community center.
There was no ballroom.
No staff.
No enormous dining table.
Just a kitchen with yellow curtains.
A garden.
And a living room filled with books.
She cooked her own meals.
Invited friends over.
Worked late when she wanted.
Rested when she needed.
And slowly learned that peace didn't have to be earned.
One evening, Rebecca visited.
She brought wine and takeout.
They sat on the floor beside the coffee table.
Rebecca looked around.
“You seem happy.”
Claire smiled.
“I am.”
“Do you miss him?”
Claire hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Sometimes.”
Rebecca studied her.
“Do you want him back?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“I miss the man I thought he was.”
She swallowed.
“But I don't miss being lonely beside him.”
Rebecca nodded.
May you like
Claire smiled sadly.
“That's the difference.”
