Chapter 15 - THE WIFE WHO CAME BACK BY CHOICE

Eighteen months after Claire left the mansion, Adrian asked her to dinner.

She agreed.

They had been spending time together for several months.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Without pretending the past had disappeared.

Adrian had changed.

Not perfectly.

Not overnight.

But genuinely.

And Claire had changed too.

She no longer measured her worth by whether her husband noticed her.

She knew who she was.

What she wanted.

And what she would never accept again.

That evening, Adrian took her to the greenhouse behind the old mansion.

The place she had once loved.

The place she'd stopped visiting when their marriage became too painful.

He had restored it.

Not with expensive imported flowers.

But with the plants Claire had once grown there.

Herbs.

Roses.

Lavender.

And a small lemon tree.

Claire stood in the doorway.

Her eyes filled.

“Adrian.”

He smiled nervously.

“I remembered.”

She looked at him.

“You remembered.”

He nodded.

“I've been trying to remember the things I should never have forgotten.”

Claire walked inside.

The greenhouse smelled of damp earth and rosemary.

She touched a rose leaf.

Then turned toward him.

“What is this?”

Adrian took a breath.

“A question.”

Her heart began pounding.

He stepped closer.

“Claire, I know I don't deserve another chance simply because I've changed.”

She watched him.

“And I know you don't owe me anything.”

His voice trembled.

“But I love you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I loved you badly before.”

He swallowed.

“I want to love you better now.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“I'm not asking you to move back into that house.”

She looked up.

“I'm asking whether you'd consider building a new life with me.”

Silence filled the greenhouse.

Then Claire whispered:

“Adrian.”

He waited.

“I can't go back to the woman I was.”

He nodded.

“I don't want you to.”

She took a breath.

“I won't give up my work.”

“I know.”

“I won't disappear into your life again.”

“I know.”

“And if you ever make me feel invisible—”

He shook his head.

“Then I want you to tell me. And I'll listen.”

Claire studied him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then she smiled through her tears.

“Okay.”

Adrian froze.

“Okay?”

She nodded.

“We can try.”

He closed his eyes.

Then laughed.

A broken, relieved sound.

Claire stepped into his arms.

And for the first time in years, the embrace felt equal.

Not like a husband reclaiming his wife.

But like two people choosing each other.

Again.

Later that evening, Claire returned to her townhouse.

Adrian drove her.

He carried her overnight bag to the door.

Then stopped.

She looked at him.

“What?”

He smiled.

“Nothing.”

“Adrian.”

He laughed.

“I was just thinking.”

“About what?”

He looked at the small house with yellow curtains.

“About how wrong I was.”

Claire smiled.

He continued.

“I thought you had nothing without me.”

His voice softened.

“But you had an entire life I never bothered to see.”

Claire took his hand.

“And now?”

Adrian smiled.

“Now I want to be part of it.”

She kissed him.

And this time, when Adrian Vale walked through her front door, it wasn't because he owned the house.

It was because she'd invited him in.

Adrian Vale spent nine years believing his wife would never leave because he gave her everything money could buy.

He learned too late that the one thing she needed was something he had never learned to give.

But when Claire finally chose to love him again, it wasn't because she needed him.

It was because he'd finally become a man she could choose freely.
