Chapter 8 - THE SENATOR'S PERFECT FAMILY

Senator Charles Whitcomb appeared on television the following morning.

He stood beside his wife.

His son Ethan stood behind them.

The senator smiled solemnly.

“My family has always supported working Americans.”

Kate watched from her mother's hospital room.

Her stomach turned.

The senator continued.

“Recent accusations against my son are politically motivated.”

Kate switched off the television.

Margaret looked at her.

“Don't let him frighten you.”

Kate nodded.

But her hands were shaking.

That afternoon, Naomi received a legal notice.

The Whitcomb family threatened a defamation lawsuit.

They claimed Kate had fabricated the assault.

They questioned her credibility.

They suggested she was motivated by money.

Damon read the notice.

Then looked at Naomi.

“Can they do this?”

“They can threaten litigation,” she said. “That doesn't mean they'll win.”

Kate sat quietly.

Then asked:

“What happens if I testify?”

Naomi looked at her.

“You'll be questioned. It may be difficult.”

Kate nodded.

“Will they ask about my mother?”

“Possibly.”

Kate swallowed.

Then looked toward Margaret.

Her mother smiled weakly.

Kate turned back.

“Then I'll tell the truth.”

Damon studied her.

“You don't have to prove anything to me.”

Kate looked at him.

“I'm not doing it for you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

And something in his expression changed.

Respect.

Not pity.

May you like

Not admiration for her suffering.

Respect for her choice.
