Chapter 6 - THE TRUST THAT NEVER DIED

Damon had grown up hearing that his grandfather created a compensation fund for families affected by industrial accidents.

The fund was supposed to provide medical support, education grants, and housing assistance.

But after his grandfather died, the trust was dissolved.

Or so Damon believed.

Margaret's revelation changed everything.

She remembered preparing documents for the trust's restructuring.

The assets were supposed to remain protected.

Instead, they were transferred through a series of shell companies.

The lawyer overseeing the transactions was Charles Whitcomb.

At the time, he was not yet a senator.

He was an ambitious attorney with powerful clients.

Damon reviewed the records with independent counsel.

The evidence suggested that Whitcomb and several associates had diverted money from the trust.

Millions.

Possibly more.

Kate listened quietly.

Then asked:

“Why would Ethan care about me?”

Margaret looked down.

“Because I kept copies.”

Damon stared.

“What copies?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Documents proving the trust wasn't legally dissolved.”

Kate felt cold.

“Where are they?”

Margaret hesitated.

Then looked at her daughter.

“In your father's old piano.”

Kate stared.

“My father died when I was twelve.”

Margaret nodded.

“He knew what I was protecting.”

Damon stood.

“Then we need to secure those documents.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“We need to make sure they reach people who can use them lawfully.”

Damon nodded slowly.

“You're right.”

Kate watched him.

For the first time, she saw something beneath his reputation.
