Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO NO LONGER DISAPPEARED

Their wedding took place in the Blackwell garden.

Spring flowers lined the stone paths.

White chairs stood beneath the trees.

A string quartet played softly.

Kate walked down the aisle beside her mother.

Margaret wore a pale lavender dress.

Her hair had begun growing back.

She looked radiant.

Damon waited beneath an arch of white roses.

His eyes filled when he saw Kate.

When she reached him, Margaret kissed her cheek.

“I'm proud of you,” she whispered.

Kate smiled.

“I love you, Mom.”

Then she turned toward Damon.

He took her hands.

The officiant began.

Damon spoke first.

“Kate, when I met you, I thought power meant being able to protect everyone.”

He swallowed.

“But you taught me that real protection begins with listening.”

His eyes filled.

“I promise to respect your choices.”

“To stand beside you.”

“To never confuse love with control.”

“And to build a life where you never have to make yourself smaller to feel safe.”

Kate smiled through tears.

Then she spoke.

“Damon, I spent most of my life trying not to be noticed.”

She looked toward her mother.

“I thought disappearing was the safest way to survive.”

Then she looked back at him.

“But you saw me when I was afraid.”

Her voice trembled.

“And you didn't ask me to become someone else.”

She smiled.

“You simply reminded me that I deserved to be treated with dignity.”

They exchanged rings.

The officiant smiled.

“By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

Damon kissed Kate.

The guests applauded.

Later that evening, Kate stood on the terrace overlooking the garden.

Damon joined her.

“Tired?” he asked.

She smiled.

“A little.”

He wrapped an arm around her waist.

“Happy?”

Kate looked toward the ballroom.

The same ballroom where she'd once been terrified.

The same house where she'd learned that silence could protect the wrong people.

Then she looked at Damon.

“Yes.”

He kissed her forehead.

Kate smiled.

For twenty-six years, she'd learned how to disappear.

But now she knew something better.

May you like

She knew how to stand in the light.

And she had no intention of hiding again.
