Chapter 13 - THE TRUST RESTORED

The civil litigation over the diverted trust continued for more than a year.

Investigators recovered substantial assets.

A court-appointed administrator began identifying beneficiaries.

The process was complicated.

Some families had moved.

Some beneficiaries had died.

Others had never known the trust existed.

Damon funded independent legal assistance for eligible families through a separate charitable initiative with external oversight.

Kate insisted the program remain transparent.

He agreed.

Margaret Bennett received a settlement reflecting her family's documented entitlement.

The money helped cover ongoing medical care and provided financial stability.

But the greatest relief came when her doctors announced that her lymphoma had responded well to treatment.

Kate cried in the examination room.

Margaret laughed.

“Sweetheart, you're squeezing my hand.”

Kate loosened her grip.

“Sorry.”

Margaret smiled.

“Don't be.”

That evening, they celebrated with takeout Chinese food.

Damon joined them.

He brought flowers.

Margaret looked at him.

“You know,” she said, “I wasn't sure about you.”

Damon smiled.

“I suspected.”

She studied him.

“But you've been good to my daughter.”

Damon looked at Kate.

“She makes that easy.”

Kate rolled her eyes.

“Both of you, stop.”

May you like

They laughed.

And for the first time in years, Kate felt the future opening in front of her.
