Chapter 9 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO PLAYED THE WRONG NOTE

Lily returned to the piano two weeks later.
She approached it cautiously.
Ethan sat beside her.
"Would you like to try?"
She nodded.
He lifted the lid.
The keys gleamed.
Lily pressed one.
A bright note filled the room.
She smiled.
Then pressed another.
And another.
Ethan watched her.
His expression softened.
"Do you like music?"
She nodded.
"Mommy sings."
He smiled.
"I know."
I stood in the doorway.
Lily looked at him.
"Can you play?"
Ethan hesitated.
"A little."
She grinned.
"Show me."
He placed his hands on the keys.
Then began playing a simple melody.
I recognized it immediately.
The song he'd played for me four years earlier.
The night he told me he loved me.
My eyes filled.
Lily listened.
Then tried to copy him.
She hit the wrong note.
Stopped.
Looked frightened.
Ethan smiled.
"That's okay."
She stared.
"I did it wrong."
He shook his head.
"Music isn't about never making mistakes."
He guided her little hand.
"It's about trying again."
May you like
Lily smiled.
And for the first time since Victoria pushed her, she laughed at the piano.
