Chapter 5 - THE LETTER THAT NEVER REACHED HIM

Ethan's attorney, Rebecca Sloan, began reviewing old security records.

The threatening photograph I'd received four years earlier had been preserved in a box of my belongings.

I gave it to her.

She examined the paper.

Then the envelope.

Then the handwriting.

"Did you receive anything else?"

I hesitated.

"Yes."

Ethan looked at me.

"What?"

I swallowed.

"A letter."

I went to my room and retrieved a small envelope.

Inside was a note I'd written to Ethan after discovering I was pregnant.

I'd never mailed it.

Not because I didn't want to.

Because someone had intercepted the first letter I sent.

I had received it back three days later.

Across the envelope, someone had written:

HE DOESN'T WANT YOU.

Ethan stared at the words.

His face went pale.

"I never saw this."

I looked at him.

"I know."

He swallowed.

"I would have come for you."

My eyes filled.

"I know that now."

Rebecca examined the envelope.

Then frowned.

"Interesting."

We both looked at her.

She pointed to a faint mark near the corner.

"This was processed through a private mail service."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Which one?"

Rebecca looked up.

"The one used by your family's foundation."

Silence.

Ethan stared.

"My father's foundation?"

May you like

She nodded.

And suddenly, the threat felt much closer to home.
