Richard Haynes was arrested six months later.
The investigation uncovered financial fraud, witness intimidation, and evidence connecting him to the conspiracy surrounding Ethan's father's murder.
Victoria was questioned.
She denied knowing about the criminal activities.
Investigators found no evidence that she had participated in the original conspiracy.
But her cruelty toward Lily had already ended her engagement.
Ethan refused to reconcile.
He also began restructuring the Caldwell businesses.
He cooperated with authorities.
Removed corrupt executives.
And started separating legitimate operations from the criminal relationships he'd inherited.
It was difficult.
Dangerous.
Expensive.
But he continued.
One evening, he came home exhausted.
I was studying at the kitchen table.
Lily was asleep upstairs.
Ethan sat beside me.
"It's done."
I looked up.
"What?"
He smiled faintly.
"The last illegal partnership."
