Chapter 6 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE FOUNDATION

The Caldwell Foundation had been established by Ethan's father twenty years earlier.
Its public mission was simple.
Education.
Medical research.
Community development.
But the records Rebecca uncovered told a different story.
Large sums of money had moved through shell organizations connected to private contractors.
Several payments were labeled as consulting fees.
Others as security expenses.
One company appeared repeatedly.
Haynes Strategic Holdings.
Victoria's family.
Ethan stared at the documents.
"How long?"
Rebecca looked up.
"At least six years."
His jaw tightened.
"My father trusted Richard Haynes."
Rebecca nodded.
"That may have been the problem."
I looked at the papers.
"What does this have to do with me?"
Rebecca hesitated.
Then turned a page.
There was a photograph.
My photograph.
Taken four years earlier.
Outside Columbia University.
My stomach dropped.
Ethan went still.
"Why is she in the foundation files?"
Rebecca swallowed.
"Because someone was monitoring her."
I stared.
"Who?"
She looked at Ethan.
"Richard Haynes."
Victoria's father.
The man who had smiled at me during charity galas.

The man who had once told Ethan I was a distraction.
The man who had known exactly how much Ethan loved me.
