Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO LEARNED TO STAY

Lily turned five in the spring.
Ethan planned a birthday party in the garden.
Not a grand society event.
Just children.
Balloons.
Cake.
And a small piano-shaped piñata that Lily insisted was "too pretty to hit."
Ethan laughed.
"Then we won't."
She smiled.
"Good."
I watched them from the porch.
Lily ran toward him.
"Daddy!"
He turned.
She jumped into his arms.
He caught her.
I felt my chest tighten.
Two years earlier, she'd been afraid he might leave.
Now she trusted him completely.
Not because he bought her gifts.
Not because he lived in a mansion.
But because he showed up.
Every morning.
Every bedtime.
Every school event.
Every scraped knee.
Every nightmare.
May you like
He stayed.
And that was what mattered.
