Chapter 6 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Leo's pediatrician identified a feeding difficulty that required specialist follow-up.
Together with the household nurse, we worked on a feeding plan.
I didn't become his permanent caregiver.
I helped connect Dante with qualified professionals.
But I visited occasionally.
Maya loved Leo.
She called him “Baby Lion.”
Dante pretended to dislike the nickname.
Then started using it himself.
One afternoon, Maya wandered into the library.
I followed her.
She stood before a framed photograph.
A beautiful dark-haired woman holding a newborn.
“Mommy?”
I approached.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Is that Baby Lion's mommy?”
I nodded.
“I think so.”
Dante appeared behind us.
His expression softened.
“Her name was Sofia.”
I turned.
“Your wife?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
I looked at the photograph.
“She was beautiful.”
Dante swallowed.
“She was.”
Maya studied him.
“Where is she?”
Dante knelt beside her.
“She died.”
Maya's expression changed.
Then she reached out and hugged him.
Dante froze.
For a moment, he didn't move.
Then he slowly wrapped his arms around her.
I watched.
And something inside me shifted.
Not because he was powerful.
May you like
But because a frightened little girl had offered him kindness.
And he'd accepted it.
