Chapter 3 - THE SECRET NORA COULDN'T TELL
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Luca regretted the question immediately.
Nora looked at him.
Her expression was exhausted.
“Would you have listened?”
The words struck harder than any accusation.
Luca opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Nora looked away.
“You were always busy.”
He swallowed.
“I would have made time.”
She gave a small, sad smile.
“Luca.”
He waited.
“You didn't make time for dinner.”
Silence.
“You didn't make time for my birthday.”
His chest tightened.
“And every time I tried to tell you something important, your phone rang.”
Luca looked down.
She continued.
“I didn't want Lily to become another obligation you resented.”
He stared.
“Resented?”
Nora nodded.
“You married me because our families arranged it.”
Luca closed his eyes.
“You gave me money. Security. A beautiful house.”
Her voice broke.
“But you never gave me a reason to believe I could bring my problems to you.”
Luca reached for her hand.
