Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Chamomile Water

I stood in the center of the master library, the heavy oak doors guarded from the outside by four armed enforcers.

Isabella sat on the velvet sofa, her small legs resting on a plush ottoman. For the first time in thirty-six months, she was not staring blankly at the wall. Her eyes were fixed on her own toes, wiggling them beneath the warm wool blanket with wide-eyed disbelief.

Beside her, Dr. Malcolm Reeves—my chief private physician who had collected half a million dollars annually to manage Isabella’s medical rehabilitation—stood with his tablet, his face pale and slick with sweat.

“It’s a spontaneous neuromuscular anomaly, Antonio,” Dr. Reeves insisted, waving his hands defensively. “A transient reflex arc triggered by thermal stimulation from the hot water. It means nothing clinically.”

I didn't answer him. I opened the leather-bound journal Sophia had handed me.

The pages were filled with Elena’s unmistakable handwriting, interspersed with botanical notes, chemical formulas, and precise anatomical sketches.

‘May 14,’ one entry read. ‘The paralysis is not from spinal trauma. The spinal cord was intact after the crash. They are administering a synthetic neurotoxin—derived from Datura stramonium—in her daily pediatric calcium supplements to maintain flaccid paraplegia. The antidote is a daily transdermal wash of concentrated mentha piperita, rosmarinus, and matricaria recutita to extract the lipid-bound alkaloids through the peripheral nerve endings.’

My hands gripped the edges of the desk until the mahogany groaned.

The warm basin of water Emma had carried into the garden was not an innocent game. It was the exact counter-compound Elena had designed before her death.

I looked up slowly from the page, fixing my gaze on Dr. Reeves.

“Malcolm,” I said softly, my voice devoid of emotion. “Who prescribed Isabella’s daily calcium supplement?”
