Chapter 8 - A CHRISTMAS GIFT WITHOUT A PRICE

Clara discovered the debt had been canceled two weeks later.

Her father called.

Crying.

“Clara.”

She froze.

“Dad?”

“It's over.”

Her heart raced.

“What?”

“The debt.”

She stared.

“What do you mean?”

He explained.

Vinnie had signed a release.

No more payments.

No more threats.

No more calls.

Clara sat down.

For a moment, she couldn't breathe.

Then she whispered:

“Who did this?”

Her father hesitated.

“A man named Moretti.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Tony.

Of course.

That evening, she found him in the library.

He was reading beside the fireplace.

She stood in the doorway.

“Mr. Moretti.”

He looked up.

“Clara.”

She walked toward him.

“Did you pay my father's debt?”

Tony closed the book.

“No.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“I had the debt reviewed.”

She stared.

He continued.

“Your father had already repaid more than he borrowed.”

Clara's eyes filled.

“So you made Vinnie cancel it?”

Tony nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked down.

Then whispered:

“Why?”

Tony studied her.

“Because he was exploiting your family.”

Her eyes filled.

“You didn't have to.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Clara asked:

“What do you want in return?”

Tony's expression changed.

“Nothing.”

She stared.

He continued.

“You don't owe me anything.”

Her lips trembled.

For a moment, she looked as though she might cry.

Then she whispered:

“Thank you.”

Tony smiled faintly.

May you like

“You're welcome.”

And for the first time, Clara realized that kindness could exist without a hidden price.
