Marcus was arrested.
Victor Kane was arrested.
Their financial crimes began unraveling.
I could have handled things differently.
Years earlier, I would have.
I would have found them.
Punished them.
Made sure nobody ever heard their names again.
But Lena had changed something in me.
Not by asking.
Not by pleading.
Simply by surviving.
By loving her daughters.
By refusing to become cruel because cruel men had hurt her.
One evening, I stood in my office looking at the city.
Daniel entered.
“Boss.”
I looked up.
“Yes?”
“People are asking what happens next.”
I stared.
Then answered:
“We change.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
I turned toward him.
“No more trafficking. No more threats against families. No more pretending violence is the only way to survive.”
Daniel studied me.
Then nodded slowly.
