Chapter 5 - The Awakening of the Matriarch

At 2:00 PM, Nathaniel arrived at Greenwich Hospital under the cover of a private medical transport.
In the intensive care unit on the fourth floor, Margaret Whitmore was awake. Her fractured wrist was encased in a lightweight cast, and her breathing was supported by nasal oxygen, but her eyes were razor-sharp and burning with unyielding fury.
When Nathaniel walked into the room, Margaret lifted her good hand.
“Did you find the proof?” she croaked, her voice raspy from the breathing tube that had been removed hours earlier.
Nathaniel knelt beside her bed, taking her hand gently. “Lily saw everything, Mother. The little girl in the east wing.”
Margaret’s eyes softened with profound tenderness. “Rosa’s sweet child... God bless that baby.”
“And we cracked Vivien’s offshore accounts,” Nathaniel continued. “She siphoned eighteen million dollars with Bradley Sinclair.”
Margaret let out a cold, humorless chuckle that made her bruised ribs ache. “I told that snake she was an amateur. She thought a sixty-four-year-old woman would roll down the stairs and stay quiet in the dirt.”
“The engagement party is tonight, Mother,” Nathaniel said. “The press is arriving at seven.”

Margaret looked at her son with the fierce pride of a woman who had raised a titan.
“Put me in a wheelchair, Nathaniel,” Margaret commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Dress me in my finest emerald velvet gown. I want to look that girl in the eyes when the handcuffs click around her wrists.”
