Chapter 8 - The Contract of Brotherhood

When Valerie returned to the estate, she held a family meeting in the grand dining room.

Nick and Thomas sat side by side, their faces pale with anxiety. Arthur Sterling laid out a set of legal documents bound in dark leather.

“Nick,” Valerie began gently. “Your aunt Evelyn loves you more than words can say. She searched for you across three states for three years. She is coming to meet you tomorrow.”

Nick’s breath hitched. He looked at Thomas, whose eyes were red from crying. “Do I have to leave forever?”

“No,” Valerie said firmly. “Here is what we have arranged, with your aunt’s full and enthusiastic agreement.”

Arthur Sterling adjusted his glasses and read from the legal decree:

“First: Nicholas Carter’s legal custody will be officially restored to his aunt, Evelyn Carter, in Chicago.

Second: The Vance Family Educational Foundation has established a fully funded, irrevocable trust of $2.5 million in Nicholas Carter’s name, covering all medical care, psychological support, private preparatory schooling, and university tuition through graduate school.

Third: Mrs. Valerie Vance has purchased the property adjacent to Evelyn Carter’s home in Chicago for summer and holiday residencies, and Evelyn has agreed to spend all school breaks and holidays at the Vance estate.

Fourth: Thomas Vance and Nicholas Carter are granted reciprocal legal guardianship visitation rights under a shared-family covenant.”

Thomas looked up, his jaw dropping. “You mean... he’s not going away forever?”

“He is going home to his aunt, who has missed him for three years,” Valerie said, smiling through her own tears. “And we are going to be part of his family for the rest of our lives. You two will see each other every single holiday, every summer, and every weekend we can manage.”

Nick stared at the documents, then looked at Valerie. The boy who had spent years fighting for crumbs on frozen pavement suddenly broke down into deep, chest-heaving sobs.

Thomas threw his arms around him, and Valerie wrapped them both in a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

“You’re safe now, Nick,” Valerie whispered into his hair. “The nightmare is over.”
