Chapter 4 - The Marina Raid

By midnight, a cold rain swept across the harbor. Fog rolled over the wooden docks, muffling the rhythmic slap of dark water against boat hulls.
Valerie stood behind the barricade near the marina entrance beside Detective Jenkins and three armed port authority officers. Against Valerie's protests, Nick and Thomas sat inside the heated police cruiser nearby. Nick had insisted on coming along to positively identify the slip and vessel.
“We don’t have a federal search warrant for private maritime vessels yet, Mrs. Vance,” Detective Jenkins warned, checking her tactical watch. “If we board without probable cause and she tosses the hardware into the ocean, your money is gone forever.”
“We don’t need to board unannounced,” Valerie said, her voice dropping into a register of ruthless authority. “I am the sole registered owner on the vessel’s maritime deed. Daniel only had operating captain privileges.”
She pulled her personal identification and corporate registration documents from her purse and handed them to the lead port officer. “As the sole owner, I am reporting an unauthorized squatter aboard my vessel and requesting immediate police escort to inspect my property.”
The officers exchanged glances, nods of respect passing between them. “That’s all we need. Move in.”
Silently, the team moved down the slick planks of Slip 42. The Osprey sat dark in the water, its blinds drawn, but a faint blue flicker from a laptop screen illuminated the cabin window.
With a master magnetic keycard pulled from her keychain, Valerie bypassed the main salon hatch. The door swung open with a hiss of compressed air.
“Police! Hands where we can see them!” Detective Jenkins shouted, breaching the cabin with her tactical beam sweeping the room.
Rebecca shrieked, dropping a champagne glass that shattered across the teak floor. She lunged toward the cabin table to close her open laptop, but an officer grabbed her wrist, twisting her down against the leather banquette and cuffing her hands behind her back.
On the table sat the silver metal briefcase. Inside was Valerie’s private corporate cryptographic key, six forged European passports, and two stacks of bundled hundred-dollar bills.
Rebecca glared at Valerie with venomous hatred. “You think you’re so smart, Valerie! Daniel hated every minute of your self-righteous success! You were always the brilliant founder, and he was just your shadow!”
Valerie didn’t flinch. She walked over to the laptop, inserted her administrator override key, and clicked [CANCEL ALL PENDING TRANSFERS].

Valerie closed the laptop, looked down at her former assistant, and said with icy calm: “Daniel wasn't living in my shadow, Rebecca. He was living in my mercy. And tonight, that mercy has officially run out.”
