Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past

Three weeks passed. The divorce proceedings against Daniel were swift and merciless. Facing twenty-five years in federal prison for wire fraud, domestic child abuse, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny, Daniel accepted a plea bargain that stripped him of every penny and placed a lifetime restraining order protecting Valerie and Thomas.

Yet, a new storm was gathering on the horizon.

State Child Welfare Services opened a mandatory inquiry into Nick’s custody. Because Nick was a runaway ward of the state with an open foster warrant, he could not simply remain under Valerie’s informal care.

A stern, gray-suited caseworker named Margaret Lawson arrived at the Vance estate on a rainy Tuesday morning.

“Mrs. Vance, I understand your gratitude toward Nicholas,” Caseworker Lawson said, laying a thick manila folder across the study desk. “However, state guidelines require that wards be returned to licensed group homes or placed with biological relatives pending formal dependency hearings.”

“He was abused in the state system, Miss Lawson!” Valerie argued, her voice rising with protective fury. “Look at his medical records! Look at the healed fractures from his last foster home in Newark!”

“I am well aware of his history,” Lawson replied steadily. “Which is why returning him to a standard foster home is out of the question. But our registry has identified a surviving biological relative who has filed an emergency claim for Nicholas.”

Valerie froze. “A relative?”

“His maternal aunt, Evelyn Carter,” Lawson explained. “She lives in Chicago. According to our preliminary records, she has been searching for Nicholas since his mother passed away three years ago. When Nicholas’s father abandoned him, he deliberately falsified the child’s surname on state intake forms to prevent Evelyn from obtaining custody.”

Valerie felt her heart wrench. She had come to love Nick as her own son. Thomas and Nick were inseparable, spending every afternoon doing homework together and learning to ride bicycles in the courtyard.

“Is she... is she a good woman?” Valerie asked, her voice tight with suppressed grief.

“We are conducting the home assessment now,” Lawson said. “If she passes, Nicholas will be placed in her custody by the end of the month.”

That evening, Valerie sat Nick down in the library to explain the situation.

Nick listened silently, his hands gripping the arms of his chair until his knuckles turned white. “Are you sending me away because I did something wrong?”

“No! Never, Nick!” Thomas cried out from the sofa, tears streaming down his face. “Mom, don't let them take him!”

Valerie pulled both boys into her arms, holding them tight against her chest. “Nick, your aunt Evelyn has been searching for you for three years. She didn't abandon you; your father hid you from her. But listen to me very carefully: no matter what happens, you are never alone again. I will not let anyone take you anywhere that isn't completely safe and full of love. I give you my sacred word.”
