Chapter 3 - The Midnight Convoy in Atlanta

A twin-engine Sikorsky S-76 VIP helicopter, painted in high-gloss midnight navy with the gold trident crest of Hayes Maritime on its tail, descended through the torrential rain.

Its powerful searchlights illuminated the suburban street, blinding Julian and Gwen as they shielded their eyes in panic.

Simultaneously, from both ends of the quiet residential avenue, six unmarked, jet-black armored Cadillac Escalades screeched around the corners in tight formation, mounting the curbs and boxing in Julian’s driveway.

Hydraulic doors slammed open in perfect unison.

Twelve executive protection operators dressed in tailored dark wool coats and Kevlar vests deployed across the asphalt, forming an impenetrable security corridor with umbrella escorts.

Stepping out from the rear of the lead Escalade was Commander Marcus Stone, Director of Global Intelligence for Hayes Maritime.

Beside him walked Arthur Hayes.

At fifty-nine, Arthur was an imposing, broad-shouldered titan with distinguished silver hair, dressed in a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit and a heavy cashmere overcoat. His expression was not filled with rage; it was carved out of ancient, immovable obsidian.

The moment Arthur saw his eight-month-pregnant daughter standing in the mud with a soaked paper grocery bag, his eyes flared with an inferno that turned the freezing air into a furnace.

“Seraphina!” Arthur’s voice boomed across the cul-de-sac as he crossed the lawn in four massive strides.

He shed his cashmere overcoat, wrapping it tenderly around his shivering daughter, sweeping her gently into his broad chest.

“Father…” Seraphina breathed, burying her cold face against his shoulder as the scent of cedar and familiar warmth enveloped her.

“I’m here, baby,” Arthur whispered into her wet hair, kissing her temple with fierce, agonizing love. “The lion has his daughter back. You never have to stand in the cold again.”

Julian stumbled down two porch steps, his jaw hanging open in sheer, paralyzed shock. “Wait… what is this?! Who authorized a helicopter in my neighborhood?!”

Arthur turned around slowly, holding Seraphina protectively against his side.

When Arthur’s piercing steel-gray eyes locked onto the porch, Beatrice let out a strangled shriek and collapsed onto her knees right beside the welcome mat.

“Mr… Mr. Chairman…” Beatrice whimpered, clutching the porch railing to keep from fainting.
