Chapter 8 - THE SECRET IN THE HARCOURT FOUNDATION

The investigation uncovered another disturbing connection.
Arthur Harcourt had established a charitable foundation after the war.
Its public mission was to help displaced families.
But some historical financial records suggested that money intended for family reunification had been diverted.
Elliot ordered an independent audit of the surviving archives.
The findings were painful.
The foundation had supported legitimate relief work.
But it had also concealed records that could have reunited separated families.
Arthur had benefited from the system.
And Henry's identity had been rewritten.
Elliot stared at the report.
For years, he'd admired his grandfather.
Arthur was the man who supposedly built the moral foundation of the Harcourt family.
Now Elliot faced the possibility that his family's fortune rested partly on exploitation.
He looked at Nora.
“I don't know how to fix this.”
Nora considered his words.
“Start by telling the truth.”
Elliot smiled sadly.
“You make it sound simple.”
“It isn't.”
She looked toward Henry's room.
“But hiding it won't make it better.”

Elliot nodded.
For the first time in his life, he began to understand that preserving a family legacy and honoring a family were not always the same thing.
