Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LISTEN

Elliot learned about Nora's dismissal the next morning.
He was furious.
His first instinct was to call the restaurant's owner.
Threaten legal action.
Demand her reinstatement.
But then he remembered something Nora had said.
Don't make decisions for me.
So he called her.
“Nora.”
“Elliot.”
“I heard about your job.”
She sighed.
“Of course you did.”
“I'm sorry.”
“It's not your fault.”
He hesitated.
“Can I help?”
Silence.
Then Nora answered.
“I don't want charity.”
“I know.”
“I don't want you to buy the restaurant and fire everyone.”
Elliot almost smiled.
“That was one of my ideas.”
“Elliot.”
“I'm kidding.”
She laughed despite herself.
He continued.
“I know someone hiring at a museum.”
Nora went quiet.
“A museum?”
“Yes. They're developing an oral-history program focused on immigrant families.”
Her heart skipped.
“Why are you telling me?”
“Because you have experience documenting a rare dialect and preserving family stories.”
Nora swallowed.
“Are you offering me a job?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I'm telling you about an opportunity.”
She was silent.
Then said, “Send me the information.”
Elliot nodded.
May you like
“I will.”
And for the first time, he helped someone without trying to control the outcome.
