Chapter 7 - THE LETTERS THAT NEVER ARRIVED

Two weeks later, Miriam discovered a collection of letters in a private archive.

They had been written by Amelia over several decades.

Some were addressed to Henry.

Others to the Harcourt family.

None had been delivered.

The letters described Amelia's survival.

How a farming family had found her near the bridge.

How she eventually emigrated to America.

How she'd spent years searching for her brother.

Nora read one letter aloud.

Dear Henry,

I don't know if you're alive.

I don't know if you remember me.

But I still remember the bridge.

I remember your hand.

I remember you telling me not to be afraid.

If you are alive, please know that I never stopped looking for you.

Henry began crying.

Elliot turned away.

Nora continued.

I have a daughter now.

She has your smile.

I hope one day you can meet her.

Nora's voice broke.

That daughter had been Nora's mother.

The woman who died before learning that her uncle was alive.

Nora stopped reading.

Henry reached toward her.

“Did Amelia have a good life?”

Nora wiped her cheeks.

“She had a hard life.”

Henry closed his eyes.

“But she was loved.”

He nodded.

“And she loved us.”

Henry began crying harder.

For nearly eighty years, he'd believed his little sister died alone beneath a bridge.

Now he knew she'd survived.

Raised a family.

And spent her life trying to find him.
