Chapter 6 - THE LETTER IN THE HOTEL ROOM

The hotel room was warm.

Clean.

Quiet.

But it felt empty.

I spent the first night staring at the ceiling.

The next morning, I began looking for work.

Before the accident, I'd worked as a veterinary assistant.

I loved animals.

Loved the routine of caring for creatures who couldn't explain where they hurt.

But I had left my job after Connor convinced me we could manage on his income while I was pregnant.

Now I needed to start over.

I applied to three clinics.

One called back.

A small veterinary practice on the west side of Billings needed temporary help.

The owner, Dr. Rebecca Lane, interviewed me that afternoon.

She studied my résumé.

“You have good experience.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

She looked at my bandaged hands.

“Are you medically cleared to work?”

“Not yet. I have a follow-up appointment next week.”

She nodded.

“Then we'll discuss a start date after that.”

For the first time since Connor threw me out, I felt hopeful.

When I returned to the hotel, an envelope waited at the front desk.

No return address.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Madison,

I know you don't trust me. You shouldn't trust anyone simply because they helped you once.

But I wanted you to know that Rosa packed the blue sweater you left behind. It's in the package with this letter.

I hope your recovery goes well.

Alessandro.

I stared at the note.

No demands.

No request to return.

No mention of money.

Just a sweater.

I opened the package.

Inside was the soft blue sweater I'd worn during my first week at the estate.

It smelled faintly of lavender detergent.

I pressed it against my face.

And cried.

That evening, Connor called again.

I didn't answer.

He left a voicemail.

“Madison, we need to talk about the baby. You can't keep ignoring me.”

I listened once.

Then saved it.

I contacted a family-law attorney the following morning to understand my rights and options.

May you like

For the first time, I wasn't waiting for Connor to decide what happened next.

I was making decisions for myself.
