Chapter 15 - THE LIFE THE SNOW COULDN'T TAKE

Three years after the accident, I stood in front of a mirror wearing a simple ivory wedding dress.
The woman looking back at me barely resembled the frightened girl who'd left Connor's apartment with nothing but her keys and wallet.
I was stronger.
Happier.
And no longer ashamed of needing help.
Rosa stood behind me adjusting my veil.
“You look beautiful.”
I smiled.
“Thank you.”
She wiped her eyes.
“Don't make me cry before the ceremony.”
I laughed.
“No promises.”
The wedding took place in the estate garden.
Snow still covered the distant mountains.
But the afternoon was warm.
Alessandro stood beneath an arch of white flowers.
He wore a dark suit.
His scar was still visible.
The same scar I'd noticed when he knelt beside me in the snow.
Grace walked down the aisle carrying a basket of petals.
She was three now.
Still curious.
Still fearless.
She stopped halfway.
Looked at Alessandro.
And shouted:
“DADA!”
Everyone laughed.
He crouched.
“Yes, princess?”
She grinned.
“Mommy pretty!”
Alessandro looked toward me.
His eyes filled.
“Yes,” he whispered. “She is.”
Our vows were simple.
Alessandro promised to love me without trying to control me.
I promised to speak honestly, even when the truth was difficult.
We promised to protect Grace.
To respect each other's independence.
And to build a home where love was never used as a weapon.
After the ceremony, Grace climbed onto Alessandro's lap.
“Dada?”
He smiled.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Can we have cake?”
He laughed.
“Absolutely.”
That evening, after the guests had gone, I walked into the garden alone.
The air was cool.
The mountains glowed beneath the setting sun.
I remembered the night of the accident.
The snow.
The blood.
The cold.
The headlights.
The stranger who had knelt beside me.
I had thought my life was ending.
Instead, it had been beginning.
Alessandro stepped onto the porch.
“Madison?”
I turned.
He smiled.
“Everything okay?”
I nodded.
“Just remembering.”
He walked toward me.
Then took my hand.
“Good memories?”
I looked at him.
“Some.”
He smiled sadly.
I leaned against his chest.
“Do you know what I thought when I woke up at your estate?”
He shook his head.
“That you were dangerous.”
He laughed softly.
“I was.”
I looked up.
“And then I learned you could be kind.”
His expression softened.
I continued.
“And you learned you could be different.”
He kissed my forehead.
“Yes.”
Inside, Grace called for us.
Rosa was laughing.
The house smelled of cake and flowers.
And for the first time in my life, I wasn't afraid of tomorrow.
I had been abandoned while pregnant.
Left alone in a snowstorm.
Bleeding beside a wrecked car.
But I had survived.
I had rebuilt my life.
Found work I loved.
Became a mother.
And learned that love didn't have to hurt.
Alessandro squeezed my hand.
“Ready to go inside?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
Together, we walked toward the lights.
Toward our daughter.
May you like
Toward the home we'd chosen.
And toward a future that no longer belonged to fear.
