Chapter 13 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK TOO LATE

Connor returned when Grace was six months old.
He contacted my attorney.
Requested a meeting to discuss his role in her life.
I agreed to proceed through appropriate legal channels.
I didn't want revenge.
I wanted stability for my daughter.
Connor looked different when I saw him.
Thinner.
Older.
Less certain.
We met in a supervised professional setting.
He looked at Grace.
His eyes filled.
“She's beautiful.”
I nodded.
“She is.”
He swallowed.
“Madison, I made a mistake.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He stared.
“I was scared.”
“I know.”
“I didn't think I could be a father.”
I nodded.
“And now?”
He looked down.
“I want to try.”
I didn't promise anything.
I didn't tell him he was forgiven.
I explained that Grace's needs would come first and that any parenting arrangements would have to be safe, consistent, and legally appropriate.
Connor nodded.
For once, he didn't argue.
Later, I told Alessandro about the meeting.
He listened.
Then asked:
“How do you feel?”
I thought carefully.
“Sad.”
He nodded.
“Angry.”
He waited.
“And relieved.”
He looked at me.
“Why relieved?”
“Because I don't need Connor to love me anymore.”
Alessandro took my hand.
May you like
I smiled.
“I know who I am now.”
