Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO DIDN'T HAVE TO STAY

The first weeks with Grace were exhausting.

She woke every few hours.

I barely slept.

My apartment filled with diapers, bottles, blankets, and tiny clothes.

Alessandro visited often.

But he always asked first.

He brought meals.

Washed dishes.

Folded laundry.

And learned how to hold a newborn without looking as if he were handling explosives.

One afternoon, Grace fell asleep against his chest.

He sat motionless.

I smiled.

“You can move.”

He shook his head.

“She'll wake up.”

I laughed.

“You're terrified of a seven-pound baby.”

He looked down at her.

“Yes.”

I watched him.

The man who commanded fear in other people.

The man whose name appeared in newspaper articles.

The man who had carried me out of the snow.

Now sat in my living room afraid to disturb a sleeping infant.

Something inside me softened.

That evening, I asked:

“Why do you keep coming?”

He looked at me.

“Because I want to.”

I smiled faintly.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

He hesitated.

“Madison, I care about you.”

My heart pounded.

He continued.

“And I care about Grace.”

I looked down.

“Alessandro—”

“I don't expect anything.”

He smiled sadly.

May you like

“I just want you both to be happy.”

For the first time, I realized love could be offered without a demand attached.
